Article Context

Description

Students are guided to explore how the mathematical model of one relationship type can be obtained by modifying the mathematical model of another. Students are further guided to analyze each type of relationship using only phase portraits. This project is based on a set-up introduced by Steven Strogatz.

The overall aims of this project are as follows:

  • to show students how the differential equation of a modeling scenario can be modified to obtain the differential equation of a related scenario;
  • to show students how to use the phase portraits of a system of differential equations to analyze short term and long term behaviors of the dynamics of a real-world scenario; and
  • to show students how to make use of the phase portraits of a system to discuss a real-world scenarios without necessarily involving the technical terms like fix points, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, etc.
