Data visualization is a foundational data science skill. One way to help students begin to learn about data visualization is to tap in to their innate creative instincts. This activity can be used to get students to start thinking about how data can be visualized. Ideally, the instructor would give fairly vague advise, perhaps sketching very simplistic plots and figures, so the students can explore visualization naively.

Description

This resource includes an sample data set, including the context under which these data were collected, and a small number of purposely vague tasks related to "visualizing" data. The tasks are open-ended in order to encourage students to think creatively about how to convey quantitative information in a visual format.
