Data visualization is a foundational data science skill. One way to help students begin to learn about data visualization is to tap in to their innate creative instincts. This activity can be used to get students to start thinking about how data can be visualized. Ideally, the instructor would give fairly vague advise, perhaps sketching very simplistic plots and figures, so the students can explore visualization naively.

Thanks for sharing this Matt - this looks like a great context for gaining low-tech experience with data viz. Do you have some examples of student work or descriptions of common student misconceptions / knowledge gaps that you can share?

I also think that the peer evaluation provides a great set of questions for learning about different kinds of visualizations.
